Press Release - May 28, 2000
Palestinian Preventive Security forces (PSS) from Ramallah raided the home of Palestinian citizen Intissar Tawfick Hamdan - 27 years old and an employee of the Teacher’s Creativity Center - without her knowledge and without her being present in the house at the time of the raid.
The house raid occurred on Friday 26 May 2000 at 3:00 am in the morning, when PSS officers welded shut the house and began searching the interior of the house. Neighbors witnessed the security forces taking papers and photographs from the house. The homes of the neighbors who witnessed this were also searched and asked personal questions concerning Intissar and who she knows. Intissar discovered that her house had been raided and sealed only the next day when she returned home.
Intissar received a phone call from the PSS on Saturday requesting her presence at the PSS headquarters in Ramallah for questioning. She went to the headquarters at 2pm in the afternoon and was released at 12:30am, on condition that she not leave the area and to return for further investigation next Monday after 4pm. They interrogated her without informing her if there were any charges against her, and asked her personal information, such as what political party she belongs to, who her friends are, who she wants to marry, etc.
The above procedures are a clear violation of basic human rights, in particular:
- The breaking into Intissar’s house, after smashing down the door, without a legal search warrant and without the presence of the owner of the home.
- The detention and interrogation of the owner of the home without legal summons explaining the reasons for the interrogation.
